  • Do Littmann Stethoscopes need maintenance?

Believe it or not they need very little maintenance.  But there is a very important minor maintenance that will make all the difference.  The ear tips and the binural (the stainless steel tubing that connects the ear tips to rubber tubing) can  get small amounts of ear wax building up.  Ear wax will eventually effect the acoustics of your scope.  There is an easy solution.

Every few months take a pipe cleaner and dip it rubbing alcohol and clear the ear tips and binural.

For the scopes that have gone decades without cleaning, you may need to use compressed air to get the tubes clear.

A few minutes of work will keep your Littmann stethoscope working like the day you bought it.

  • Buster, our Golden Retriever

Those of you who know Goldens, know they often have skin allergies.

Our Golden, Buster is no exception.  Recently he itched his elbow to the point of rawness.  I decided to wrap it up to reduce his access to the wound.  Because of his thick fur, you cannot use anything with adhesive on it.

There is a group of wraps referred to as self adhering wraps.  I decided to try 2 different products.  The first, Vet Wrap (Human version is called Coban) manufactured by 3M.  The comparison was a generic product produced by Webtex.

Buster got the Webtex product off in minutes, and was happily chewing it.   The Vet wrap stayed on much longer and was clearly the winner.

Caution!  I caution you that Vet Wrap/Coban  has much more compression than a tensor bandage, so you must be very careful not to put it on too tight.

A quick survey of local vets confirms Vet Wrap as the product of choice.

  • Israeli Bandage

The emergency Bandage or Israeli bandage is a very serious field dressing.  Sometimes referred to as a compress bandage, they were first used in a NATO peacekeeping operation in Bosnia.  The bandages were nicked named "Israeli bandage" by US soldiers and have been the bandage of of choice for both the US Army and US special forces.  The bandage was invented by an Israeli military medic, Bernard Bar-Natan.
